Travel to the Bitteroot Valley of Montana
Montana! – Even today the name still brings a thrill of excitement to my heart! From the time I was a young girl growing up in Texas I longed for the freedom of the wild country. Why? I don’t know. ‘Don’t Fence Me In’ was my favorite song. I wanted to ride my horse where man had rarely gone. Absorb the wildness of God’s untouched land. Find the secrets of the hidden canyons – and I have been blessed with the opportunity to do just that.
I’ve sat my horse on a mountain top while the storm raged around me and felt my heart soar into the heavens as the wind whipped my hair around my face. I have camped across the draw from the Grizzly Bear wondering each night if I would be awakened by a nocturnal visit from the king of beast of North America. I have fished in crystal mountain lakes from the back of my horse eating the freshest of campfire trout for supper. I have truly ridden where no woman has gone. Into the backcountry of the largest wilderness in the lower 48 states, the Bob Marshall Wilderness and fifty miles to the end of a dirt road into the River of No Return Wilderness; so many secret places with names I did not know. Below is a poem memorized in my youth. It was my motto:
I’ll saddle up and I’ll be free,
I’ll find a dreamer just like me.
We’ll ride where we have never been
and we’ll be drinkers of the wind.
I drink the wind while I am young,
do all the things I’ve never done.
I’ll find the sunsets in my mind
And taste the wildness of nature’s wine.

Off of Interstate 90, turn south on Hwy 93 to Hamilton. Follow the directions through Missoula then travel south approx 40 miles to a stop light 5 miles north of Hamilton. Turn east at this light onto Woodside Cut-Off. (If you are coming from the south into Hamilton turn right (east) at the Main Street light by Safeway. The road will curve north. Follow to Hamilton Heights, turn right (east). Follow Woodside Cut-Off 2 miles into Corvallis turning right at the light onto Eastside Hwy. Going 2 1/2 miles watch for Bitterroot Nursery on your right. As you top the hill just past the Nursery you will see Hamilton Hghts going to your left. Follow for 2 1/2 miles to Wilcox Ln, turn left (north). As you top the first hill, turn right, into our drive. Welcome!
